Retirement homes (especially housing / care and care homes) is an accommodation for those who need service and care 24 hours a day.
In a retirement home you get all the support you need in your daily life, including health care activities by a nurse, occupational therapist and physiotherapists as well as regular medical visits.
You are always entitled to apply for a place of retirement at the municipality. In order to be granted a subsidized place in a retirement home from the municipality, your nursing needs are often so large that they can not be met by the home care service.
This means that those living in homes for the elderly today are often the most elderly and people with a dementia disease. If you feel very insecure at home, you should also talk to your municipality about the possibilities of moving to a retirement home.
It is the municipality that grants and subsidizes a place but a retirement home can be run either by the municipality itself or by a company or non-profit organization approved by the municipality.
The cost for you is the same. Some non-municipal activities offer places without a decision from the municipality, and then you pay the entire fee yourself. However, this is very unusual.

Good to know is that you are likely to encounter several different names on retirement homes. The collective term from the Social Services Act is especially residents , but other names are care and care homes, service houses, nursing homes, dementia homes, retirement homes, care homes, nursing homes and group residents .
