What to consider?

Health and social care

Your retirement home accommodation includes:

  • Cleaning, laundry and food
  • Personal Care: Eg. Ascension, dressing, laying and shower. Nursing staff are available 24 hours a day and will help you with what you need. Do you want to go to the toilet and you will always be able to get help at any time of the day.
  • Health Care: Eg. take medicine, apply wounds or take samples. There should be access to a nurse. Career hours for healthcare staff may differ between different accommodation, but there must always be nursing nurses available, the times they are not in place at the accommodation.
  • Nurse may also delegate certain duties to nursing staff eg. help taking medicine. Responsible doctors are usually not included in the housing organization, but all retirement homes cooperate with doctors who visit and visit the accommodation once a week. This is because you should not go on a doctor’s visit. You can also choose to have your own GP if it suits you better.
  • Rehabilitation: The elderly is responsible for access to a occupational therapist and physiotherapist (physiotherapist). The frequency of these accommodations differs. Some accommodations have their own rehab staff who are always in the house, others have those who come regularly for example once a week. Work and physiotherapists can also instruct nursing staff so that they can help you with easier exercises like exercising in the corridor.

Additional services

There are retirement homes offering additional services in the field of aged care and services. You can then get some help that is not included for payment. It may be to get an extra big cleaning , to have flowers bought, you have a clean laundry or some kind of food.

Social life and activities

The elderly have always different spaces for social cohabitation. There is usually a large family room which is like a common living room. There are often TVs and newspapers. It is also common for the residents to eat in a common dining room, even if one who wants to eat can eat in his room.

In the vast majority of accommodation, activities are also organized as well as individual as common. There may be concerts, gymnastics, reading, walking or the like. There may also be issues or activities that you initiate and receive support.

The range of activities can differ widely between different retirement homes. Some have some common activity this week while others have things happening every day.

Also, do not forget that there are a lot of chores on the accommodation that you can help with, for example, taking care of flowers, bake or anything that belongs to your household.

There are also accommodations that cooperate with youth organizations, schools or other volunteers who come and visit the retirement home and socialize and find out about things with the residents.

Additional services

There are retirement homes that offer additional services in relation to activities. It may be on a relative’s birthday party or if you want to go to the theater. Read more about additional services .

Food and drinks

Every day a fixed number of meals are served at the retirement home. Usually, breakfast, lunch and dinner and a number of snacks are usually included. Meals are often served at fixed times and you decide whether to eat with others or if you want to eat in your room.

If you have your own kitchenette you can choose to arrange food yourself or to take an extra snack. If you do not have a kitchenette but would like it, you will be notified if it can be solved.

The food can be cooked at the accommodation or delivered from another cooking place.

If you have needs or requests for special costs due to, for example, allergy or religion, it should be possible to arrange. As with other adapted foods, for example, gets hard to eat / chew / swallow.

Related

Often, close relatives are very involved in a move to a retirement home because the elderly are often in a poor condition. Take the help of your close associates to arrange for you in your new accommodation.

Just as for the elderly moving, it is important that the close associates get good cooperation with the staff at the retirement home. Be open and ask questions. If something is not good, you should pick it up.

However, it is always important as close relatives to remember that it is the elder’s will who is ruling. It can be a difficult balance.

Some seniors work a lot to involve the close associates in everything that concerns you, for example through regular meetings.

Once the elderly have moved into the accommodation, you as a family member will always come and greet you. There are no visits — this is your home’s home now. Some accommodations offer guest rooms for overnight stays, or you can also request extra beds in the room.
